UK Parents are still ignoring Booster Seat law

A survey of 1006 motoring families from Insurance firm Churchill Car Insurance has discovered 23% of parents with children aged 3-12 do not use booster seats at all.

Churchill's survey goes on to say 10% of parents surveyed mistakenly think that once children are eight years of age they do not require a child car seat. Read more »

Parents are being prosecuted for ignoring Seat Belt law

Children are still being put in unnecessary risk by parents by not ensuring they wear a seatbelt during car journeys.

Northampton Police have said that 41 people in 12 months have been given £30 fines for failing to ensure that their children were strapped in.

Parents were found to be committing one of two offenses, either a child under three not wearing a seatbelt when in the rear of the car or a child between the ages of 3 and 14 failing to wear a rear seatbelt. Read more »

Report highlights poorly fitted and maintained Child Booster Seats and Car Seats

In a recent report just published by Derbyshire County Council it is apparent that even though parents are getting the message that car seats and booster seats need to be used when taking their children on car journeys they are still not fitting them correctly or ensuring they are in a good state of repair.

Of the 125 car seats checked last month by Derbyshire County Council 75% (93) were either incorrectly fitted, unsuitable for the type of car they were used in or damaged as to cause safety issues for the child. Read more »

Why has the UK law changed?

Research shows adult belts are best for people over 150cms in height. The Government surveys show that 75% of children are using adult seatbelts without the necessary booster seat. This means they are not tall enough for the belt to cross their body at the appropriate and safe place. The lap part of the belt needs to be as low as possible in order to avoid internal injuries in the event of an accident. Also straps across the neck can present obvious danger. Therefore children need to be raised or boosted from the normal seat height.
